Can I tune up my conditioner myself or is it best to hire a proffesional
l have a Comfortmaker. The minimum Volt is 197 and the maximum is 253.
/> Considering our budget l would like to tune it up myself or have
my husband do it. Has anyone else done this and if so, do l
need specific tools, fluids, etc? Or is it just best to go ahead and call
a Mechanical appliance shop?
I fully support answer of hiring proffesional.
Ask the HVAC company . How much is the cost to do a spring tuneup or
preventative maintenance.
ask in detailed exactly what they would do for it.
Go with the HVAC company that you feel is the most proffesional. But there is alot you can do yourself. Make sure power is off from the disconnect. Lightly rinse the condenser fins outside. http://srmi.biz/Tips.Residential_A_C.Cleaning_condenser_coils.htm Do Not Use High pressure or Garden hose with to high of a pressure to clean the fins. High pressure water even from garden hose might collapse the fins. which will affect the AC efficiency. Clean out all the weed / plant that is too close to the outside unit Change filter. Inspect the duct for any leaks & seal all leaks. one thing you most likely cannot do is to determine if ur AC is properly charged. You need a HVAC gauge , & ''Knowledge'' of what proper charge is. There is no particular proper PSI reading on the gauge . Proper charge will give a different reading on different environmental variable such as outside temp, inside temp, humidity in the air inside the home. So you must hire a HVAC technician to properly determine the proper charge in ur AC. But if the AC cooled just fine. i will do all other preventative maintenance my self & let it be.
I highly suggest you call someone to maintenance any air
conditioning product. I have had to go behind more husbands & brother
in-laws & it usually cost them twice as much. Also you must have a federal
license to access the refrigerantnt circuit. The company I work for charges
$85 to do a full preventative maintenance in which we check everything. We
tune the system to perfection almost always saving the home owner more
than the cost in energy savings. ARI did a study & found that 80% of all A/C systems installed in the US are improperly charged. FP&L did a study in Fl. & determined that 70% of their customer is elec bill was the A/C system. I have my car tuned up. Why. because gas ain't free. I discuss this topic & many others on my weblog http://ac.com. There are even some funny stories & it is all for a good cause Locks of Love. check it out.
What matters on an air conditioner is being able to check freon
levels, and check for leaks..
There are things you can do yourself though, change the filters, trim the
grass and weeds around the outside unit, and clean the coils on the
outside unit..
It only cost me $65 to have my air conditioner unit cleaned and
tuned up last year. It would have cost me about the same to do it myself,
and more to have it fixed if I let my husband do it.
